Rail Transport

Railways, Air traffic and Bus service are the major modes of communication in and around Lincoln, the capital city of Nebraska, the USA. Rail Transport is an important mode of conveyance for the local people in Lincoln and tourists. The national passenger rail system of Lincoln is Amtrak. This railway system is the main artery of the city of Lincoln. This is the major passenger carrier railway transport operational in Lincoln. This rail transport runs regularly from California Zephyr to different directions like, Emeryville, California and Chicago. This railway service runs trains across the San Francisco bay.

Amtrak is a quasi-governmental corporation the service of which was initiated on May 1, 1971 mainly to cater to the passengers of Lincoln, Nebraska. This the rail transport in the USA that offers intercity passenger carriage service. The portmanteau “Amtrak” is made of “American” and “Track”. The Federal government in Lincoln is the owner of the majority of the stocks of Amtrak rail transport. The president of the United States himself appoints the board of directors of the national railways. But the ultimate decision is subject to confirmation by the United States Senate.

In the year 1971, Common stock was issued to railroads that contributed both, necessary equipments for the operation of Lincoln railways and capital for the same. Presently the worker strength of the company, Amtrak is nearly, 19,000. This rail transport runs passenger carriage on a track, almost 21,000 miles long. This track connecting, 500 destinations of almost 46 states, was previously owned by some other railroads. In the fiscal year of 2006 the company broke its own record of passenger carriage by serving around 24.3 million people, which is an all time record for the company. In the year 2007 Amtrak rail transport has already crossed the mark of 25 million passengers.
