Lincoln is the capital city of Nebraska. It is one of the few large cities of Nebraska not located along either the Platte River or the Missouri River. The city was originally laid out near Salt Creek and among the nearly flat saline wetlands of northern Lancaster County. The city's growth over the years has led to development of the surrounding land. The city is full of beautiful parks and Pioneer Park and Nature Center is one of them. The Nature Center, in located at the southwest corner of the park. The Center features four miles of walking trails through native Nebraska prairie grasses, woodlands and wetlands.

Pioneer Park and Nature Center covers an area of 1,100-acre and includes an outdoor amphitheater, picnic areas, hiker trails, ponds, a sled run and a golf course. The park was gifted to the city in 1928 by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Harris. It was designed by Ernst Herminghaus and was placed on the National Register of outstanding landscape architecture in 1993. The two entrances to the park are graced by life-size statues of a bison and an elk. The Smoke Signal, a 14-foot likeness of Chief Red Cloud, was erected in 1935, and stands on a geologically interesting outcrop of Dakota sandstone. The Columns, a favorite spot for wedding, are remnants from the 1907 remodeling of the Federal Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. Pinewood Bowl, a natural outdoor amphitheater, is the site of a summer musical and other community events. Pioneer Park and Nature Center can be reached using the Bison Trail, part of the 99-mile hiker city trail system.
