The Nebraska Sate Capitol in Lincoln, Nebraska is the capitol and legislative office of Nebraska. There are other government offices of Nebraska State in this statehouse. It is the most distinctive state houses in United Sates.
The Nebraska State Capitol was built between 1922 and1932 and was designed by Bertram Grosvenor. It is made up of limestone representing classical Gothic architectural design. |
Previously there were two more State Capitol buildings in Nebraska built in 1867 and 1889 but both had structural problems. The legislature formed a Capitol Commission to build this State capitol building. The commission had a governor, an engineer and three other members appointed by the governor. The governors who had chaired the commission are Samuel R. McKelvie, Charles W. Bryan, Adam McMullen and Arthur J. Weaver.
Architect Thomas R. Kimball had written a competition program specifying their want for a unified vision of a building.
The commission bowed to Goodhue’s innovative design. The construction began in 1922 under the supervision of William Lefevre Younkin. This 122 m/400 feet limestone structure cost $10 million. The construction was done in four phases. It took ten years to complete the construction. The Nebraska State Capitol building has a co-axial plan like a catholic church.
The Nebraska State Capitol has four wings radiating from the central dome. The different wings separate the different branches of government.
Sculptor Lee Lawrie. Hartley Burr Alexander designed the sculptural elements of Nebraska State Capitol. Alexander in his sculpture has dedicated some parts to the Nebraskan native tribes.
The building has a large square base representing the flat plains of Nebraska. The vertical tower represents the dreams and aspirations of Nebraska’s pioneers. The main stairway has a bison inscribed relating to the Native American the entrance is flanked by the progress of the pioneers.
The tower has a golden dome facing towards the north which symbolizes the sun. The surface changes its color with the season.
Hildreth Meiere, a New York based interior designer, designed the interiors with motifs of wild animals, sunflower, corn, wheat and buffaloes. She also designed the doors to the east and west chambers. The doors weighing 340 kg is a mark of master craftsmanship.
The exterior of the Nebraska State Capitol is ornamented by the history of the law of Ten Commandments celebrating Nebraska’s statehood.
