Memorial Stadium, Lincoln

The Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Nebraska is located at the University of Lincoln, Nebraska. The Memorial Stadium, Lincoln has the highest capacity to hold a crowd in any Nebraska city. In November 24, 2006 the stadium accommodated 85,800 people the highest so far to watch Nebraska play on Colorado.

The Memorial Stadium, Lincoln is the hub of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team.

The students, faculty and alumni of the University of Nebraska felt the need of a football stadium. In 1922 a fund of $430,000 was allocated to build the stadium. The construction of the Memorial Stadium, Lincoln was finally finished in October 20, 1923. It was dedicated to the Nebraskan war heroes of Civil and Spanish-American War and World-War I and II

The four corners of the Memorial Stadium, Lincoln the following words are inscribed.

  • Southwest: "Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory
  • Southeast: “In Commemoration of the men of Nebraska who served and fell in the Nation’s Wars.”
  • Northeast: "Their Lives they held their country's trust; They kept its faith; They died its heroes.”
  • Northwest: "Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport

The Memorial Stadium, Lincoln has been extended and renovated in several phases. Originally there were stands on the east and west sidelines after the Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium with a capacity of 31,000 people. This part was not renovated and the original architecture still remains. In the north south zones there have been a series of renovation between 1964 and 1972 where the seating capacity was increased to nearly 74,000. In 1999 42 luxury boxes were added above the west stand.

During this time the Memorial Stadium, Lincoln was rededicated to Tom Osborne, a retired coach.

In 2004 another major renovation took place adding 6,000 seats thus increasing the sitting capacity to 81,000.

The Memorial Stadium, Lincoln has the largest screen in Nebraska with 33 feet tall and 40 yards wide.
