Numerous Buildings and complexes have grown up in and around Lincoln, Nebraska. The International Quilt Study Center is one of the major buildings and structures whose existence have made the city of Lincoln proud. This particular center is situated at International Quilt Study 234 Home Economics Building , College of Education and Human Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln,Lincoln, NE 68583-0838. It possesses the largest stock of quilts which are meant for the public. |
International Quilt Study Center was founded in the year of 1997. It began its journey with a donation of 950 quilts ( approximately) from the Ardis & Robert James Collection. James,who was overwhelmed by the book named “ Nebraska Quilts and Quiltmakers” published by the University of Nebraska Press in the year1991, decided to make the donation of 950 quilts fot the establishment of International Quilt Study Center. It has a wonderful collection of quilts . The collection includes French century works which belong to the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the Jonathan Holstein stock, stock of African-American quilts popularly called the Robert Cargo, Amish quilts. Among all these collections, The Jonathan Holstein collection constitutes all the quilts that were exhibited in the landmark exhibition organized at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the year of 1971. International Quilt Study Center also possesses an excellent collection of contemporaneous quilts.
The aim of this Center is to inspire the interdisciplinary analysis and study of all the features of quilt- making in the world. It also aims at promoting the conservation artistic tradition through the stock, preservation and display of quilts and things. At present, the International Quilt Study Center possesses a collection of about 2300 quilts. Many teachers, students and people interested in quilt study come to International Quilt Study Center for the purpose of studying and dealing with quilts and textiles related to it.
