History of Lincoln

Lincoln, the capital city of Nebraska, the USA is something more than merely a capital city of a province in the USA. The city of Lincoln, Nebraska features both the signs evident particularly in capital cities and in tourist destinations famous for their pristine wilderness. History of Lincoln describes the process of the development of a city that matured into a bustling modern city out of a beautiful tourist destination.

History of Lincoln tells how the tiny village of Lancaster became a busy capital city in 1856. The newly created Lancaster County got its county seat in Lincoln, in 1859. At the beginning, when the Nebraska Territory was created, Omaha was its capital. But, the major part of the population of Nebraska Territory lived on the bank of Platte River.

The southern part of the valley of River Platte was acquired by Kansas. The village of Lancaster was also selected because of the salt flats in the region and marshes of the area. Later, the small city was renamed after the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Despite some people’s opposition, Lancaster was renamed as Lincoln.

Previously salt mining was the most important profession of the people in Lincoln. Gradually people shifted to the profession of agriculture that built the backbone of Lincoln economy. In 1867, Nebraska became a state. Instead of Omaha, Lancaster became the state capital. The name was changed in honor of the late president of the USA. Still today this historical city of Lincoln is the seat of Nebraska’s State government today.

The capitol of Nebraska took approximately 10 years to become what it is now. Later on this city was declared to be the fourth architectural wonder by the American Institute of Architecture. Lincoln houses the only unicameral, non-partisan governing body in the United States.

The history of Lincoln legislature is over 50 years of age. Since then the Lincoln governing body has gradually grown to become a full-fledged governing body of this capital city. In order to learn more about Lincoln browse through the site.
